SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES

Cyber security is a domain for which researchers have struggled to understand the boundaries, scope, and limitations. The cyberspace environment involves very large numbers of possible states, includes data from multiple abstraction layers (sometimes simultaneously), and contains physical and non-physical entities, all of which are dynamic, complex, interactive, and context dependent. Successful approaches to solving problems in cyber security and cyber data analysis tend to be exploratory or learning-based because the foundational elements and technologies change rapidly. Additionally, since cyberspace is fundamentally an adversarial domain, cyber security problems are often human-centered and exist in a social context.

The 2014 International Workshop on Human-Machine Teaming in Cyber (HMTC 2014) is focused on exploring the issues related to how humans and agents work in cyber security and cyber data analysis, and how that work is facilitated through automation.

HMTC 2014 Topics of Interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Studies of the human-machine interface involved in cyber tasks;

  • Automated information sharing among human-cyber teams;

  • Information requirements for cyber tasks;

  • Exploration of the increasing role of automation in cyber security;

  • The design of agent-based assistants and multi-agent systems to carry out roles in cyber;

  • Other forms of collaborative cyber work involving humans and agents or facilitated by automation technologies.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Workshop on Human-Machine Teaming in Cyber (HMTC 2014) will be held as part of the 2014 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS 2014). We are interested in high-quality research conducted through case studies, cognitive task analyses, empirical investigations, cognitive/behavioral modeling and simulation, agent-based and multi-agent modeling and simulation, system design and evaluation studies, and other related methodologies that better define and explore the link between the roles, responsibilities, and tasks of humans and automated systems in cyber.

PAPER SUBMISSION

You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above and other topics related to human-machine teaming in cyber. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Submission should include a cover page with authors' names, affiliation addresses, fax numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses. Please, indicate clearly the corresponding author and include up to 6 keywords from the above list of topics and an abstract of no more than 400 words. The full manuscript should be at most 8 pages using the two-column IEEE format. Additional pages will be charged additional fee. Short papers (up to 4 pages), poster papers and posters (please refer to http://cts2014.cisedu.info/home/posters for the posters submission details) will also be accepted for submission. Please include page numbers on all preliminary submissions to make it easier for reviewers to provide helpful comments.

Authors are invited to submit a PDF copy of their manuscript to the Workshop using the following link https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=hmtc2014. If the submission is for a short paper, a poster paper, or a poster, please indicate that on the manuscript as well.

Only PDF files will be accepted, uploaded to the Workshop link above. Each paper will receive a minimum of three reviews. Papers will be selected based on their relevance, contribution to advance the state of the art, originality, technical value and clarity of presentation. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper, if accepted. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be registered and presented at the workshop.

Accepted papers will be published in the Conference proceedings. Instructions for final manuscript format and requirements will be posted on the CTS 2014 Conference web site. It is our intent to have the proceedings formally published in hard and soft copies and be available at the time of the conference. The proceedings is projected to be included in the IEEE Digital Library and indexed in major indexing services accordingly.

If you have any questions about paper submission or the workshop, please contact the workshop organizers.
